Social Work Internship

The Counseling Center at UMBC offers a social work internship to 2nd year clinical students at the University of Maryland Baltimore, School of Social Work. The internship is a 24-hour-a-week position that follows the UMB SSW advanced field schedule of Tu-W-Th from September through May. There is an orientation for about a week at the end of August, prior to the start of the semester, in conjunction with the psychology externship program.

The primary emphasis of the social work internship is to develop clinical counseling skills within a brief psychotherapy model as well as referral assistance skills using the single session therapy model. UMBC has a highly diverse student population so there is a focus on the ongoing development of multicultural competency. The social work intern will see an average of 6-8 individual therapy clients per week, and 8-10 referrals a week, and may have the opportunity to either process-observe or co-lead a therapy group, depending on trainee experience and the availability of a group. A minimum of two hours of supervision are provided weekly.

A secondary emphasis is on outreach programming. The social work intern will have the opportunity to present Skills for Success workshops, participate in mental health screenings, or represent the Counseling Center in other outreach efforts throughout the year.

The Counseling Center has a strong commitment to embracing diversity and increasing multicultural competency. We value having staff from a broad range of backgrounds and strongly encourage applicants from diverse backgrounds to apply.

All applications should include the following:

  • A letter of interest, which describes why you are interested in training at the Counseling Center, areas of clinical interest, and previous clinical experience.
  • A curriculum vitae
  • Informal graduate transcript
  • Two letters of recommendation that identify both strengths and growth areas. One of the letters should be from your current clinical supervisor.

Applications should be submitted electronically via email to slchan@umbc.edu prior to submittal through the Office of Field Education Portal. Electronically submitted letters of recommendation must come from the letter writer directly.

Applications will be reviewed and interviews will be offered to qualified candidates on a rolling basis prior to the final deadline of February 1st. Once the intern is interviewed and final decision is made, they will be directed to submit their application through the Office of Field Education Portal: http://www.ssw.umaryland.edu/field-education/student-notebook/
